CHARLES A. MAYFIELD, M.D.
Dr. Mayfield graduated cum laude from Auburn University in 1985 with a B.S. in Biochemistry. He then pursued graduate studies in the design, synthesis, and pharmacologic evaluation of drugs as potential therapy for diabetic complications such as retinopathy. He obtained his Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry from Auburn University in 1991, followed by a National Institute of Health postdoctoral fellowship in human molecular biology at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
His research in anti-gene therapy of cancer at UAB led to a faculty appointment in 1993 where he served as Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology until 2000. During this time he also attended medical school at UAB and obtained his M.D. in 2000. This was followed by a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology from 2000 to 2005.
Dr. Mayfield then joined Pensacola Pathologists where he has served as laboratory medical director at several hospitals, director of the Division of Molecular Pathology, and head of quality assurance/quality improvement. He has also served as Chairman of the Department of Pathology and Cancer Center Committee representative for Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola since 2010.
